How-To Prevent Tool Marks on Jewelry Wire

In this video I discuss the common problem of leaving tool marks on jewelry wire while making wire-wrapped jewelry.

I decided to address this because it’s a question I have heard asked often by beginners and more experienced wire-wrappers alike. Nothing can be more frustrating than making your wire-wrapped masterpiece come alive and then finding little nicks and marks on the wire after completion.

So here are some of the best solutions I know of, though I hope you will check out the video for a full discussion of these simple tool-mark eliminating tricks:

  • Sanding the jaws of new jewelry pliers smooth before using them.
  • Using Masking Tape or Blue Painter’s Tape on the Plier Jaws to protect the wire from tool marks
  • Using non-nicking Nylon Jaw Pliers to hold the wire while working with it
  • Applying rubberized tool coating dips to the jaws before use
