Kyanite is an infrequently used gemstone in jewelry making and crafts though in the last few years more of it has been coming into that market. Today more people are becoming familiar with it’s desirable qualities in jewelry production.

Kyanite Colors

The color most people think of when you mention Kyanite is a silvery blue color somewhat like the Montana Sapphire blue. In fact the word Kyanite comes from the Greek kyanos, which means blue. Occasionally Kyanite has even been mistaken for sapphires.

However Kyanite also comes in a huge variety of other colors such as pale green, orange, grey, black, brown, white, and even occasionally even pink. Kyanite is one of those stones that changes color depending on which direction the light is coming from also, which makes it fascinating to wear and hold.

Jewelry Uses of Kyanite Gemstones

Blue Kyanite CabochonsThe bladed crystals of Kyanite are somewhat difficult to cut due to their brittle nature and tendency to snap off in perfectly straight lines. When successfully cut however, Kyanite cabochons and kyanite beads, are breathtakingly beautiful, and their shimmering blue sheen is very popular with both consumers and metaphysical practitioners.

Industrial Uses of Kyanite

While Kyanite has typically been rare in jewelry till recently, it has many industrial applications. One of the most useful is in heat resistance. Because of it’s strength under both heat and pressure, Kyanite is used in ceramics and spark plugs, as well as casting molds used in forging high heat metals.

Kyanite is also often used to make kiln furniture, bricks, and as part of the binding agent that holds abrasive grit onto a grinding wheel.

Metaphysical Lore

Kyanite is known as a high vibration crystal. It is said that Kyanite never needs clearing because it does not absorb negative energy.

Another metaphysical use of Kyanite is in balancing and opening the chakras. The different colors of Kyanite each have slightly different effects in this regard.

  • Blue Kyanite is useful for opening the throat and third eye chakras, which benefits communication and intuition.
  • Orange Kyanite is considered to be very effective with the Sacral chakra, where it enhances creativity and enthusiasm.
  • Green Kyanite is useful for balancing the heart chakra and your relationship with nature.
  • Black Kyanite is responsible for clearing negative energy in the base chakra, and helps ensure a balanced flow of energies through the chakra and meridian systems.

If you need to relax, Kyanite can also improve and ease your meditations, allowing you to de-stress more fully. Kyanite is also credited with improving dream recall, and allowing you to heal trauma through your dreams when kept under the pillow at night.
